The Government of Saint Lucia has approved a 30% subsidy for Banana Farmers in light of the rising cost of production and productivity challenges faced by stakeholders in the banana sub-sector.
Keeping true to promises made to banana farmers, Agriculture Minister Hon. Alfred Prospere has announced that all Banana farmers will receive a 30% subsidy on inputs to maintain the production output of their farms.
The agreement sealed by the Agriculture Ministry and the National Fair Trade Organisation (NFTO) will ensure that banana farmers have access to cheaper agricultural inputs, in particular fertilizers which have been highlighted by farmers islandwide as a necessary point of assistance.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development, Hon. Alfred Prospere explains that from the inception of his tenure, a major challenge expressed by farmers across the island has been the high costs of inputs.
According to him, this latest decision by the cabinet of ministers demonstrates the priority placed on building resilient, sustainable agriculture livelihoods, and underscores the importance of the Banana industry to Saint Lucia.
