REGION 8 BEXON

WELCOME

Region Eight 8 Agricultural Extension Office is located in Cul De Sac1st Floor Kamakie Building. The region encompasses the Castries Basin and its Perimeter starts from the Choc Roundabout to the Barre D’Isle.
Some of the areas covered by the Region are Cul De Sac, Morne Du Don/ Balata, Bocage, Castries, Bexon, Odsan, Ravine Poisson, and its surroundings. It is predominantly a Food and Root crop region where dasheen, plantain and bananas are grown. For the past years, there has been an increase in vegetable production and small hydroponics systems. It also has quite a bit of Livestock (Cattle, Poultry, pigs, small ruminants).

Region 8 captures a great number of Primary and Secondary Schools in Saint Lucia, where special attention is given to the Primary Schools under the School’sFeeding Programme.

Compost Making with Ciceron Primary School (CPE Class)

Activity: Compost making

A Theory and Practical session was done on the 23rd March , 2022 at the Ciceron Primary School. A class of 22 students were taught the art of building a compost heap for their  CPEA practical. Both boys and girls were tremendously involved in the activity as well as the teacher.


Activity:  Zucchini Trial Plot

Location: Dierre Fort Audience: Adiah Bernard and Lester Charles Farm

This activity started Mid –February,2022. Its genesis came from the plat of the two farmers who had an issue with the growth, as well as the pest and disease associated with this crop. A proper production and pesticide schedule was given and with the daily assistance of the region 8 extension officers a successful crop was established and harvested.

Major Roles of this Extension Office

  • Provide guidance/ assist with the transfer of new technologies in agricultural production to enhance efficiency and productivity in the agricultural sector.
  • Helps to improve the livelihoods of farmers and the farming communities creating employment and empowering our clientele/ farmers to be entrepreneurs.
  • Train and educate farmers in all crop husbandry areas.
  • To assist farmers in GAP’s (Good Agricultural Practices) protocols and Pest and Disease Management in the agricultural enterprise.
  • Helptoincreasefood security and reduce the country’s food import bill.
  • Provides support and guidance to schools in the production of produce for their school feeding programme.
  • Assist households/ housewives in the area of Peri-urban gardening.
