Water Resource Management

WATER RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

The Water Resources Management Agency (WRMA) is the primary agency mandated by law to manage and protect the water resources of the country. This is achieved through a series of activities that monitor water quality and water quantity across all watersheds on the island. Water in our rivers is affected by land-based activities, making all private and public entities our stakeholders. Thus we aim to advance and promote the principles of Integrated Water Resources Management.

The Agency is manned by a small yet dedicated staff complement with the responsibility to 1. Issue abstraction Licenses 2. Promote water resources sustainability and conservation practices 3. Promote public awareness concerning the management of water resources 4. Water resources assessments, planning, monitoring; among others.

Our evolution from an EU funded Unit tasked with managing water resources for agriculture to an Agency at the forefront of water-related issues is articulated in the vision statement “to manage the water resources of Saint Lucia in an efficient, sustainable and equitable manner that is consistent with the social, economic and environmental needs of current and future generations as well as the country’s regional and international obligations”.

Mr. Jason Ernest

Director of Water Resource Management

The WRMA was established by the promulgation of the Water and Sewage Act 2004, No. 14 of 2005.

THIS YEAR’S THEME IS "VALUING WATER”.

World Water Day 2021 is again set aside for increased awareness and sensitization of the importance of water resources to everyday life. This year, the Water Resources Management Agency (WRMA) will work in partnership with the Department of Forestry to deliver an itinerary of activities geared toward highlighting tangible ways a citizen can support the ongoing interventions by the Ministry of Agriculture to improve the accessibility to water, and to encourage proper management and use of water resources.

Jason Ernest, Director of the Water Resources Management Agency, said the placement of the World Water Day observation on the calendar each year is timely for citizens of Saint Lucia as it provides an opportunity to reflect and adjust our habits as it relates to the use of water.

The theme for World Water Day 2021 is “Valuing Water”. According to the United Nations, “the value of water is about much more than its price.”

World Water Day is in line with Sustainable Development Goal number 6 which is aimed at achieving water and sanitation by all for 2030
