PROPAGATION

The Plant Propagation Station of the Ministry of Agriculture, known to some as the Cocoa Center located in Union Castries and Bathe in Rivier Doree Choiseul has been in existence for decades. The station has served the public for many years providing technical support and a wide range of planting materials. The techniques used for plant propagation at the station ensures that customers receive their desired plant varieties of the highest quality which can produce earlier than those produced from seeds. The Propagation division continues to make every effort to provide technical support required for growth of the agricultural sector thus in its own way, contribute to feeding our nation and caring for the earth.

Plant propagation is the process of creating new plants from a variety of methods such as seeds, cuttings, bulbs and other plant parts.

What you need to know about plant propagation.

Is Plant Propagation Important?

Yes, for most of us, plants are the most important part of our backyard gardens, and what we spend the majority of our garden budget on. It makes sense to know how plants are created.

Propagation Techniques

Seeds: The biggest benefit of growing from seed is that you can produce lots of plants with ease especially if you save seeds. Some can be sown directly into the ground, while others require pots or seed trays of compost to germinate.

Grafting: is a horticultural technique whereby tissues of plants are joined so as to continue their growth together. The upper part of the combined plant is called the scion while the lower part is called the rootstock.

Budding: it is a method of propagating trees and plants by grafting a growth bud from a tree of your chosen variety to a rootstock.

Air layering:  is a method of propagating new trees and shrubs from stems still attached to the parent plant. The stem is wrapped with damp moss to encourage roots to form.
