REGION 7

WELCOME

Overview

office

Region 7 is a very dynamic region with boundaries extending from the Chopin Ridge to every area on the right, continuing into Saurot, Malzere, Vanard, Millet to Venus, Anse-La-Raye, Canaries, and back to Roseau. It includes areas such as MonD’or, Jacmel, Morne Cisseaux, Coolie-town, Bel-air, Marigot, Fomagent, and, moves back to   La Croix – every area on the right, as it joins back to the Chopin Ridge. The region is also subdivided into  four sub areas according to the zone assigned to each officer.

The region is manned by five members of staff including:

Mrs. Antonia Jagroop the regional head, Miss Cyra St.Croix the region’s secretary, and three front line extension officers namely:

Mr. Aaron Donovan, officer responsible for area 1, which includes  Malzere, Vanard, Millet.

Miss Merissa Austin, the officer responsible for areas 2 & 3 namely; Coolie town, Saurot, Bel-air, and part of Roseau.

Mrs. Diana Charles officer is responsible for area 4, Anse-La-Raye, and Canaries.

Whilst the region is known for a variety of crops; farmers from the Roseau Valley and surroundings slowly diversify into other crops, largely Sweet potato, dasheen, plantain, and vegetables to a lesser extent.
Our roles in the region include data collection, dissemination of information, and technical advice to farmers in the region. We collaborate with several Departments within the Ministry. Through these linkages, support is provided as follows: land preparation, irrigation – engineering services.

Soil sampling, and pest and disease diagnosis based on experimental results – Research unit. Supply of plants – plant propagation unit.
We work with Funding Agencies to provide much-needed support in soil conservation, environmental projects, and farm support.

The region continues to ensure that its farmers are well qualified under the Ministry of Agriculture’s Registration program, and ensure that our farmers benefit from all projects associated with the Ministry of Agriculture. One such project which the region is currently ensuring that our farmers are fully engaged in is the ‘Enhancement of the Efficiency of Production-Distribution Supply Chains in the Fruit and Vegetable Sector Project.

What sets region seven apart, is the emphasis we place on a market-led approach to farming. We guide our key farmers to avenues of available markets and accept this as part of our responsibility. This approach has taken us as far as engaging our processors. This legacy has prompted our farmers, in all efforts, to work together.

The way forward for the region involves continuing in this light. With all its challenges, we are convinced that this is the way to go, as this is what will benefit our farmers in production.
