AESD: Shaping Tomorrow's Agri-Tech Leaders

February 2 2024

The Agricultural Engineering Services Division (AESD) is dedicated to imparting the knowledge and skills of cutting-edge Agricultural Technology to the next generation of agriculturists. Our commitment to fostering the future of agriculture is exemplified through various educational initiatives, including hands-on experiences for young learners. One such occasion captured in vivid photographs showcases AESD members enthusiastically introducing the concept of Aquaponics to a group of eager grade 6 students from Dame Pearlette Louisy Primary School.

Aquaponics, a fascinating agricultural approach, combines two essential elements: raising fish in tanks, known as recirculating aquaculture, and cultivating plants without traditional soil through hydroponics. In this innovative system, the nutrient-rich water produced from fish cultivation serves as a natural fertilizer for the plants, while the plants, in turn, act as natural filters, purifying the water for the fish. This captivating method not only introduces students to sustainable and efficient agricultural practices but also instills in them the importance of interconnected ecosystems and the potential for responsible food production. Through such engaging educational interactions, AESD aspires to nurture a new generation of agricultural visionaries who will contribute to the future of farming and environmental stewardship.
