Agricultural Farmers Are Now Better Able To Safeguard Their Livelihoods.

Due to hard work and dedication, Saint Lucia, through the Department of Forestry has been chosen after rigid evaluation as a participant inthe second phase of the Land Degradation Neutrality(LDN)project aimed at implementing an integrated land use planning framework for Saint Lucia.

The second phase, launchedon May 12, 2023,as the brainchild of the UnitedNations Convention to CombatDesertification (UNCCD),Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) seeks to maintain and increase the quantity and quality of land resources necessary to support ecosystem functions and services thatyield sustainableenhancements in food security.

Meeting the selection criteriaintransformingland-based agendas, were eighteen (18)participating countries, Argentina, Benin, Central African Republic, Georgia, Jordan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Republic of Moldova, South Africa, Sri Lanka, St. Lucia, and Turkey.

This was a call for support to assist countries in strengthening the Land Degradation Neutrality targets and the Integrated Land Use Planning Framework. A number ofcountries would have submitted support requestshowever Saint Lucia wasthe only Caribbean country selected,”noted, Chief Forestry Officer Alwin Dornelly.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development commendsthe Department of Forestry for allowing Saint Lucia to become an honorary representativefor sustainable land management practices which targets an integrated planning framework for Saint Lucia.
