Agricultural Ministry Advances Digital Tools to Strengthen Data Management

October 31 2025

2025 -In a significant stride toward digital transformation within Saint Lucia’s agriculture sector, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development has intensified efforts to fully operationalize the iFarm App, an innovative data management tool designed to boost agricultural productivity, planning, and efficiency among stakeholders in the sector.

Originally commissioned in 2020 through funding and technical support from the Taiwanese International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF), the IFarm App was developed to improve the collection, storage, and dissemination of real-time agricultural data. The initiative forms part of the Ministry’s broader agenda to modernize agricultural practices, enhance decision-making, and foster greater connectivity between field officers, farmers, and market stakeholders.

Acting Deputy Director for Agricultural Services, Thaddeus Constantin, highlighted the Ministry’s renewed focus on ensuring the app’s success and long-term sustainability.

“So, we received a piece of software from the Taiwanese ICDF in 2020, which was designed to assist with the storage and dissemination of agricultural data collected by extension officers. The app, known as the iFarm App, was funded and commissioned by the Taiwanese ICDF. While the app has experienced some initial challenges, the Ministry has now committed its full efforts toward operationalizing it. To this end, we have embarked on a series of iFarm sensitization activities. One such activity involves conducting routine audits of data entries made by the officers. Another focuses on upgrading the Ministry’s IT infrastructure to ensure that officers have the necessary tools to efficiently enter and manage data,” he noted.

As part of the Ministry’s current strategy, targeted capacity-building and infrastructure enhancement activities are underway to ensure that the iFarm App functions seamlessly within the national agricultural data Management framework. These efforts include improving connectivity in rural areas, providing digital tools to extension officers, and organizing a series of audits and training exercises to strengthen the quality of data entry and use.

Constantin further explained that the efficient operation of the iFarm App will directly benefit both the Ministry and the farming community, allowing for better crop forecasting, smarter resource allocation, and improved market linkages.

“It is anticipated that with the proper use of this app, the Ministry will operate more efficiently. Markets will be better able to predict the availability of crops, allowing for improved planning by the Ministry and its stakeholders. With the support of our Quality Control Expert from Japan, Mr. Nishida, and the team from the Taiwan ICDF, we have been conducting a series of meetings to evaluate the Ministry’s infrastructure to ensure effective use of the app. Additionally, we are focused on empowering our extension officers through comprehensive training to ensure they are well-equipped to utilize the app effectively and generate the accurate data needed for the agricultural industry to function optimally,” Constantin explained.

The system’s data-driven insights will empower farmers to better align their production with market demand, reduce wastage, and enhance food security across the island.

The Ministry remains committed to fostering innovation in the agricultural sector through partnerships and technology-driven initiatives that ensure farmers are better equipped to adapt to modern challenges while promoting sustainability and efficiency.
