The Plant Research & Development Division was invited to participate in Career Day at the Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School on May 25^th 2023. Students were introduced to a number of specialist careers areas which are currently under the Plant Research Division. These include Food Science, Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Analytical Chemistry, Soil Science and Agronomy to name a few. In addition to these, the field components such as Plant Quarantine, Crop Protection/Plant Health, Agronomy and Soil and Pesticide Management were also highlighted.  In addition to the vast career options, guidance was given on different CXC subjects which would help if they were to choose any of the careers highlighted as well as possible university and degree options they could consider. The officers representing the Division also took the opportunity to introduce the students to the concept of plant health by showing a pest incursion timeline for Saint Lucia showing all the invasive species which have affected our environment since the 1980’s up until now. The Don’t Pack a Pest Campaign which was launched in 2019 was also introduced to increase their awareness of the risks associated with carrying back fruits and other plant products when travelling. Lastly, the students were engaged on the topic of TR4, what it is, where it is currently and what the potentially damaging effects could do to our banana industry.
