The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) as the Program Implementing Agency (PIA), in collaboration with the OECS Commission and national agencies, is coordinating the implementation of the project titled: Building climate resilience in the water sector in Saint Lucia. This is in close coordination with the Delegation to the European Union to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean States, OECS and CARICOM/CARIFORUM. The grant funding associated with this national project is EUR 625,000.
The project in Saint Lucia focuses on building climate resilience through the following three major activities:
Activity 1- Improvement of water availability at the Plain View Combined School, Vieux Fort
Activity 2- Upgrade of the treatment process at Des Barras, a rural community, utilizing renewable energy technology
Activity 3- Upgrade of the Vanard intake through watershed management, protection, and infrastructure upgrade
All development sectors in Saint Lucia are dependent on water, whether directly or indirectly. Climate change impacts the availability of freshwater for domestic purposes, industry, agriculture, tourism, human health, and even financial services through changes in the amount, predictability and intensity of rainfall. It is expected that through the implementation of these activities, various communities within Saint Lucia will have greater water security in light of a changing climate.
Community meetings will be held to inform residents on the progress of these activities.
