FMIS
The Forest Management Information Systems (FMIS) unit of the Division of Forest and Lands Resources serves as a repository for all data collected by the Division. Data collected by the Division include wildlife data, wildfire data, forest reserve data, chainsaw owners, removal and transportation of local timbre, project data and maps generated within the Division. The objective of the Division is to streamline all data collected by the Division into one central location where it can be stored, managed and distributed to other government agencies and members of the public.
The main activities undertaken by the Unit are data collection, data analysis, map generation using GIS, digitizing of exiting data, and compilation of reports to meet the reporting obligations of the Division under the different MEAs.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, more commonly known as “drones” are currently being used by a team of trained UAV pilots under the FMIS unit, Forestry Department. The use of the UAV is a new and innovative way of collecting, mapping and analysing real time visual data. This technology saves time, allows us to access remote areas that would previously be inaccessible to data collectors, showing a reduction in both man power and hours towards data assimilation.
The use of this new tech provides accurate GPS locations, map, photos and videos of the areas of importance. A time series can be created with imagery collected to show spatial changes.
The use of the drone is used within strict regulations and guidelines as stipulated by SLASPA and Ministry of Infrastructure. Flights have to be planned in advance and all the necessary authorities and parties involved are duly informed ahead of time.
