The Ministry of Agriculture of Saint Lucia has strengthened its ties with the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) Caribbean and A&E Agrochemicals in an innovative partnership aimed at advancing organic farming practices in the country.
This groundbreaking initiative involved agrochemical inputs trial across four demonstration plots, with the primary objective of exploring the efficacy of these inputs as a sustainable alternative to traditional chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
With the agrochemical compound yielding enhanced productivity Country Coordinator for WUSC and Sustainable Agriculture in the Caribbean (SAC) Project Dr. Nadia Paquette-Anselm expressed her satisfaction with the initial results after administering the agrochemical input on a watermelon farm demonstration plot. She also emphasized that this was an opportunity for stakeholders to witness the benefits of agrochemical inputs.
“Through the use of these sustainable and cost-effective products, we anticipate an augmented input in productivity and aesthetics of the harvested produce. Testimonies from farmers have already highlighted impressive increases in watermelon yields, with some reporting a doubling of their harvest. Such positive outcomes have the potential to revolutionize farming practices not only in watermelon cultivation but also in other crops like cucumbers. Adopting agrochemical input is a more economically viable method of farming which enhances productivity,” Country Coordinator for WUSC and Sustainable Agriculture in the Caribbean, Dr. Nadia Paquette-Anselm.
Director of Agricultural Services, Dr. Auria King- Cenac reaffirmed the Ministry of Agriculture’s unwavering enthusiasm for this collaborative effort and the government’s steadfast commitment to supporting sustainable initiatives that elevate the agricultural sector.
Dr. Cenac also emphasized the relevance of the project in addressing the challenges faced by farmers, such as increased production costs, availability of inputs, and food security amidst global uncertainties.
“The government of Saint Lucia is dedicated to ensuring the continuity of our farmers’ livelihoods and the overall stability of our agricultural sector. By supporting this project, we aim to cushion the impact of rising costs and global factors, such as armed conflicts and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, on our farmers. This collaboration sets a commendable precedent for fostering collaboration and innovation towards a more sustainable and resilient agricultural sector.” Noted Director of Agricultural Services, Dr. Auria King- Cenac
With the constant monitoring and evaluation of productivity by the Ministry, stakeholders can anticipate valuable insights that will contribute to shaping future agricultural practices in Saint Lucia.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development is committed to promoting organic farming methods, enhancing productivity, and ensuring high-quality agricultural products to meet local and international demands.
