HERBARIUM
The Herbarium is located in Union and has a collection of preserved plants that are stored, catalogued, and arranged systematically for study. Herbarium specimens act as a source of information, to determine: what the plants look like; where they are found; what environmental niche they occupy; which species are threatened by extinction; what morphological and chemical variation occurs; and, when they flower or produce seeds. These specimens can be used to provide samples of DNA to study relationships and evolutionary processes. The role of the Herbarium is also increasingly important as the rate of habitat destruction increases and climate change causes rapid changes in species ranges and various aspects of their ecology.
The Herbarium collection contains over 5000 plant specimens diversity, containing around 85% of vascular plant genera which are cared for overtime and provides an opportunity for current and future generations to identify plants, study biodiversity and use the collection in support of conservation, ecology and sustainable development.
