Hydroponics and Youth Engagement: A Step Toward Modern Agricultural Innovation
TUESDAY, JULY 8 2025
As the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security, and Rural Development prepares for the grand opening of the newly constructed hydroponics system, gifted to us by our fellow Caribbean country, Guyana, we took advantage of this opportunity to involve our youth in this groundbreaking endeavor. In keeping with the government’s mission to expose and expand present and future farmers to modernized methods of agricultural production, where innovation and technology play a significant role, we invited students to participate in a hands-on introduction to traditional hydroponics.
Five secondary schools were invited based on their interest in agricultural science and their efforts to integrate hydroponics into their curriculum. We were delighted to welcome students and teachers from Dame Pearlette Louisy Primary School, Babonneau Secondary School, Corinth Secondary School, Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School, and Entrepot Secondary School. The selected schools graciously accepted our invitation to not only witness but actively assist with the transplanting of the system. This provided students with practical experience with this soil-less, water-efficient farming method, while also deepening their theoretical understanding of hydroponics through guided instruction and interactive learning.
During the sessions, students were introduced to the principles of hydroponics, including nutrient management, water management, monitoring parameters (pH, EC, and temperature), pest and disease control, crop production cycles, and overall system maintenance. They also participated in transplanting young seedlings into the hydroponic beds under the guidance of Agriculture Officers. The students’ excitement and curiosity among themselves were evident, as they actively asked questions and engaged throughout the sessions.
It is the Ministry’s firm belief that these types of practical, educational experiences are necessary in developing the skill sets and minds required for the agriculture of tomorrow. By empowering and equipping our youth with knowledge and experience, we are laying the foundation for resilient agricultural communities and sustainable food systems that will lead to the strengthening of our country’s food security.
The Ministry again extends its sincere gratitude to the Government of Guyana for its generous contribution and to the participating schools for their enthusiasm and dedication to agricultural education. We look forward to expanding this initiative across the island, with the aim of encouraging more schools to strengthen their agricultural curriculum, particularly in areas of modern agricultural production and technology. We also hope to inspire wider adoption of the technology within the agrarian community to diversify our country’s agricultural production methods and enhance food production, as we continue to work to create a future where agriculture is smart, sustainable, and youth-inclusive.
