Pruning Training
Pruning in Cocoa, Mango, Citrus & Breadfruit
Overview
Over the past year, it was observed that tree crops such as cocoa, citrus, mango and breadfruit were not being pruned. Consequently a pruning training was planned by the region in collaboration with the Research Division to educate six(6) farmers on pruning which encourages strong growth, increases flower and fruit production, improves plant health, and removes damaged limbs, all which give aesthetic appeal to a tree. Pruning at the right time and in the right way is critical, since it is possible to kill a healthy tree through neglect or over-pruning. Essentially, pruning should enhance the tree’s natural shape.
Objectives
● To train six(6) farmers on how to prune tree crops such cocoa, mango, citrus and breadfruit.
● To educate the participants on the advantages of pruning tree crops.
Output
The turnout was great. Whilst conducting farm visits, it was observed that more farmers needed tree crop pruning training in cacao, mango, citrus, breadfruit and soursop(added crop). Nine(9) farmers were present. Farmers were very responsive with the information obtained. They asked many questions which were sufficiently answered by the resource persons. The participants also shared pruning techniques that have worked. They are looking forward to implementing what was learnt to their farm holdings and share information gained to other farmers. The farmers expressed their preparedness and keenness to participate in a practical session on any of their farms.
Additional Training
Farmers were also educated on the frosty pod fungal disease in cocoa production. The purpose of this extra training on the day was to prepare and enlighten farmers on how to manage this fungal disease since the information was passed on to officers by the Research Division.
