Transformative Training Initiative Culminates in Successful Completion

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (P.I.S.L.M), the Agricultural Engineering Services Division (A.E.S.D), and the Department of Forestry from the Ministry of Agriculture, proudly announces the successful conclusion of the transformative “Soil Doctors Program.” This four-day training initiative, held from November 21st to November 24th, 2023, at the Union Orchid Gardens, marks a significant milestone in the sustainable management of St. Lucia’s agricultural lands.

The Soil Doctors Program, a brainchild of the FAO, aimed to equip a cadre of trainers with specialized expertise in assessing soil health and implementing practices to enhance and preserve soil vitality. Comprising theoretical insights and hands-on practical sessions, this initiative targeted a diverse group of extension officers, engineering officers, and forestry officers from all eight agricultural regions of St. Lucia.

A total of 20 officers and 40 farmers participated in this immersive training, marking a significant investment in the capacity-building efforts within the agricultural landscape of the region. Notably, all trainees were awarded certificates of participation, acknowledging their commitment and dedication to advancing sustainable soil management practices.

Furthermore, the trainers, having undergone rigorous instruction, will receive official certification as trainers, enhancing their capability to impart knowledge within their respective regions. Moreover, a select group of farmers will receive coveted certification as “soil doctors,” poised to become ambassadors of sustainable soil management. These certified soil doctors will play a pivotal role in disseminating essential knowledge and training fellow farmers across the various regions, catalyzing a sustainable revolution in St. Lucia’s agricultural practices.

The resounding success of the Soil Doctors Program has garnered accolades from the FAO, underscoring its exceptional implementation within the Caribbean region. This initiative stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of multiple stakeholders committed to fostering sustainable land management practices, ensuring a resilient agricultural future for St. Lucia.
