UNION ORCHID GARDEN
The orchid greenhouse was officially opened in 2010, with two greenhouses constructed at a tune of 2.5million EC Dollars. The greenhouses have a total square area of 1500 m2 and can hold up to 40,000 adult flowering plants.
The greenhouse is an enclosed structure, with a cooling structure second to none. The system is fitted with a fan and pad cooling system. The extractor fans create air movement in one direction, coupled with the wet wall (honey comp structure) which allows air to come through. The greenhouse is equipped with sensors that measure temperature, light intensity, and humidity. The greenhouse can achieve a difference of 6º C between the internal and external temperatures. The greenhouses are movable which increases the efficiency of use of space.
The two main types of orchids grown are Phalaenopsis and Dendrobiums:
Dendrobium Orchids
The Dendrobium genus is one of the largest of all orchid groups with nearly 2,000 species. Native to Southeast Asia, these plants grow in all manner of climates. Dendrobiums are primarily epiphytes, meaning they grow on other plants. In nature,
they’re often found growing on tree branches. While the species vary in appearance, all of them are known for their profuse blooms that come in a variety of pastel tones.
