Union, Saint Lucia – The Water Resource Management Agency (WRMA) commemorated World Water Day with an Open Day event, aimed at raising awareness on the importance of water conservation in the face of climate change. Held under the theme “Accelerating Change,” the event featured interactive exhibitions, educational presentations, and demonstrations to inspire and educate the local community, particularly school children, on the crucial role of water in ensuring food security and rural development.
Director of the WRMA, Jason Ernest, highlighted the need for all Saint Lucians to play their part in conserving this precious resource, stating, “Water is fundamental to all aspects of life, it is a human right, it is at the core of sustainable development.”
Despite some progress being made towards achieving universal coverage under SDG 6, the Open Day event highlighted the urgent need to increase the rate of progress. Research Officer at the Department of Forestry, Karl Monty Augustine, emphasized the crucial link between water and forests in conserving natural resources. He reflected on the recent celebration of World Forest Day, stating, “Whatever we do on the land, whatever form our management of the land takes, has a direct impact on the water, therefore we must continue to work together in partnerships.”
As the ministry continues its efforts to reach its targets and address the challenges posed by climate change, water conservation remains a critical priority for ensuring a thriving and resilient nation. The WRMA urges all Saint Lucians to prioritize water conservation as a crucial step towards combating the effects of climate change and ensuring a sustainable future for all.
